Our involvement
We are delighted to have assisted PDV Consultants on a large and complex project in Stranraer.
The Client, Lactalis, operates the Caledonian Cheese Company in Stranraer, appointed PDV Consultants as the Principal Designers under CDM and we supported them in that role, predominantly focusing on design compliance, Principal Contractor compliance and safety file compilation.
The Project
This project involved design and construction activities to re-purpose 2 existing large rooms to create a new boiler house. Design activities include the design of 2 x Bosch gas boilers with an output of 16 tons of high-pressure steam per hour each, auxiliary equipment and associated mechanical, electrical and emergency infrastructure, as well as some structural design.
The design element was significant and not without its challenges, however effective coordination of design as well as the use of competent contractors ensured that the project was completed successfully. Note the height safety arrangements for access and working at heights on the boilers.
Additional Benefits
Apart from the safety element, the investment in more efficient boilers has provided a number of efficiencies to the plant including;
- Reduced Fuel Costs: With higher efficiency rates, the new boilers use significantly less fuel for the same amount of production, offering significant cost savings and a significant reduction in Co2 emissions, expected to exceed 1050 tons per year
- Decreased Maintenance Costs: New equipment features modern designs that are easier to maintain and less likely to require frequent repairs, further reducing operational costs.
- Improved Production Efficiency: Stable temperature control and reliable boiler performance will increase production efficiency, preventing downtime and potential losses from production interruptions
