Hand Hygiene & Handwashing

Monday 12th October is world Hand Hygiene & Handwashing is a vital part of good health and safety practices in the workplace. We often think that hand hygiene mostly applies to handling food or healthcare businesses but all employees whatever the business must operate good hand hygiene to protect themselves and others.

Everyone can protect themselves and handwashing with soap is easy. The benefits are numerous and Hand Hygiene & Handwashing should be practiced at key times such as after using the toilet or before contact with food. Clean hands dramatically reduce the risk of diarrhea and respiratory infections, which can cause serious illness or death. It is important to consider the reputational risk to a business if an outbreak of infection were to occur. 

You should wash your hands thoroughly

  • after using the toilet or changing nappies
  • before, during and after preparing food
  • between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food
  • before eating
  • after using a tissue or handkerchief
  • after handling rubbish or working in the garden
  • after handling animals

Common infections that can be avoided by properly cleaning your hands include:

  • colds and flu
  • runny noses and chest infections
  • many tummy bugs that cause diarrhoea and vomiting
  • eye infections like conjunctivitis
  • food related bugs that can be spread when cooking or barbecuing food like salmonella or listeria
  • serious healthcare-associated infections like difficile, Norovirus, MRSA etc.
