Hand Hygiene... it's in your hands

Hand HygieneMay 5th marks World Hand Hygiene Day across the world. The World Health Organisation (WHO) campaign focuses on raising awareness of the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare settings. However, the reality is that every business, be it healthcare, food services, hospitality, etc. should have this focus also.

Compliplus has a short online Hand Hygiene Course to upskill staff on the importance of Hand Hygiene. The course delivers a practical guide to training you and your staff in the necessary steps in good hand washing practices and just takes 20 minutes to complete online.

Hand Hygiene is one of the most important ways to stop the spread of infection and disease. Everyone can protect themselves and handwashing with soap is easy. The benefits are numerous and hand hygiene should be practiced at key times such as after using the toilet or before contact with food.

Common infections that can be avoided by properly cleaning your hands include:

  • colds and flu
  • runny noses and chest infections
  • many tummy bugs that cause diarrhoea and vomiting
  • eye infections like conjunctivitis
  • food related bugs that can be spread when cooking or barbecuing food like salmonella or listeria
  • serious healthcare-associated infections like C.difficile, Norovirus, MRSA etc.

You should wash your hands thoroughly

  • after using the toilet or changing nappies
  • before, during and after preparing food
  • between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food
  • before eating
  • after using a tissue or handkerchief
  • after handling rubbish or working in the garden
